Good in the Hood helping those in need

A volunteer organisation founded by local foodie identities is unlocking the kindness and power within our neighbourhood to give back to our residents.

Anthony Iacono is well known as one half of the brother duo that runs Bertoni (‘Bert’ and ‘Tony’), a Darling Street institution of some 15 years, loved for its quality food and neighbourly service. Tony is also one of the founding members of charity Good in the Hood (formerly known as 20 for 1), which was started in 2019 by Marco De Angelis who formerly owned Our Place on Darling restaurant.

Tony comments, “When Covid hit and Marco’s restaurant was unable to trade, he wanted to utilise his staff and keep them employed while doing something positive for the community, so he started making meals for those who are doing it tough. He approached me to see if Bertoni would make 20 meals a week for Balmain and Rozelle residents in need, and of course we willingly came on board. Both Marco and I then approached other local cafes, pubs and restaurants about getting involved and before we knew it we had about 15 venues providing meals. People were so happy to help.

“Despite its affluence, our area still sees thousands of people struggling in many ways, right on our doorstep. What started as an initiative to provide meals to these people is now growing into so much more. Good in the Hood works to build a community where everyone is included and recognised – it’s about fostering a sense of connection to ensure people don’t feel alone and isolated.”

Through a network of amazing volunteers, Good in the Hood will be supporting the community through its:

– Good Food Program – 300 meals a week, cooked and delivered by locals, to locals

– Community Events – all focused on increasing community interaction including barbeques, lunches, festivals, fun runs and more

– Community Programs – cooking with kids, community gardens and more

– Good Giving Program – distributing profits to existing charities aligned with their cause
