Ally Bell, floral artist extraordinaire
If you’ve bought or sold through Cobden & Hayson in recent years then you would have received some beautiful flowers from us to celebrate your settlement. The talented florist we turn to for all of our blooms is the lovely Ally Bell from Ally Bell Flowers & Foliage on Darling Street, a well-known identity in the local community.
Passionate about all things nature, you will regularly find Ally pre-dawn at the Sydney Flower Market handpicking seasonal and unusual flowers from the growers. “When I first started out, I found the markets quite overwhelming. Now I know exactly where to go so I’m in and out quickly,” says Ally.
While working in the corporate world, Ally was always seeking out creative outlets, taking various courses and classes. When it came time for her to start full-time work again, she was determined to do something that she loved and having enjoyed lending a hand doing flowers for friends parties, she was encouraged to pursue it further. “I started working from home then opened the shop four years ago and I’ve never looked back. It’s long hours and early starts for me and my team, but it’s a joy coming to work. I’m proud to have started my business from scratch on my own – I love that it’s my baby.”
“Colour and fragrance are addictive. Certain colours evoke certain emotions and I’m really interested in the psychology of colour. Different tones suit different occasions but I’m a bit of a non-traditionalist. I always find out what the occasion is but I like to speak to the client and get to know them and their style before I suggest ideas.”
“The local retail landscape has changed somewhat however we offer a premium product and premium service so I market myself to the clients I want to attract. Many of my customers are as passionate about flowers as I am. I’ve lived in Balmain for 20 years now and while it’s become more and more gentrified, I love that it’s still unpretentious and there’s still a really eclectic array of people here.”
Along with her unique bespoke bouquets, Ally also specialises in terrariums and kokedama balls and is the exclusive stockist for Myrtle and Moss Skincare and Peppermint Grove candles and diffusers. She also offers all kinds of floristry for events.
“We love to get involved with the community and share our craft. Throughout the year we host seasonal floristry classes (no experience necessary!) with really intimate classes where you can get creative over a glass of wine.”
