Birchgrove

Overview

Birchgrove is one of Sydney's most exclusive suburbs, offering unsurpassed views of Sydney Harbour. With its waterfront positioning and its grand old homes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Birchgrove is a highly prized gem in the property crown. Just five kilometres from the Sydney CBD, it is located next to Balmain and Rozelle. Large trees line the streets that are filled with freestanding homes and immaculate terraces. Premier streets in the area include Wharf Road, Louisa Road and Ballast Point Road, all of which are located just moments to harbourside Birchgrove Oval and surrounding parklands. Named after Birchgrove House which was built by Charles Birch around 1812. Birch was paymaster of the 73rd regiment. Birchgrove is a small suburb centered on a peninsula surrounded by Snails Bay and Long Nose Point. Because of its closeness to Sydney Harbour and the Sydney CBD, land and houses have been much sought after. Birchgrove House itself was demolished in 1967 to make way for home units. The original Birchgrove included swamp lands which were subsequently reclaimed. Birchgrove Oval was built on the reclaimed land.
