Annandale

Overview

The Johnston family was prolific in the suburb now known as Annandale, as evidenced by the name of its main artery, Johnston Street. Rumoured to be the first white man to set foot on our continent, Major George Johnston was given a large land grant in 1793. His vast estate, Annandale House, was named after his birthplace of Annan in Scotland, and was subsequently sub-divided as the area developed. Annandale gradually changed from a well-to-do area to a more working class address during the 1900s as its proximity to the city and ports encouraged an influx of workers and light industry grew. Today, Annandale has reaped the benefits of the Inner West’s gentrification and revival. Just 5km west of the city, it’s sought after by young professionals, artistic types and young families who enjoy the convenience and prize the character homes, warehouse conversions and terraces which line its streets.
